June 9, 1928 ~ August 21, 2013

Joyce Kane, 85, of Gettysburg, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Avera Maryhouse, Pierre.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gettysburg, with Fr. Jerry Kopel officiating.  Burial followed in the church cemetery. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Joyce Blanche Voeltz was born on June 9th, 1928 in Gettysburg to Albert W. and Blanche (Stambach) Voeltz.  Joyce was the oldest of seven children.  She attended school in Gettysburg, graduating from Gettysburg High School.  Joyce spent her entire life in Gettysburg and loved her hometown.

Shortly after graduating from high school, Joyce met a young soldier in an army uniform that she thought was the most handsome man she had ever seen.  This U.S. soldier ended up being the love of her life.  Joyce and Jim were married on August 25, 1947 and spent a lifetime together raising their family of six children.

Joyce spent her entire life caring for her family and doing for others.  She filled many volunteer positions throughout the community such as being a 4-H leader, den mother for the cub scouts, a Boy Scout leader and countless other activities that her children were involved in.

Joyce had a green thumb and grew marvelous gardens and a yard full of flowers.  She was an avid reader, reading hundreds of books from the Potter County Library.  She was an extremely talented seamstress and was responsible for the clothes that many Gettysburg children wore for many years.  Those closest to Joyce will tell you that she was as close to a self educated medical professional as you could find.

One of the best times in Joyce’s life was when she and Jim owned and operated the Eastside Drive Inn.  Many young people from the Gettysburg area will tell you they learned a lot about working from Joyce and of course that is where they earned their first income as an employee.

Joyce and Jim also enjoyed their square dancing club and attended many square dances around the area.  As Joyce said, it was a lot of fun and good exercise too.

Joyce was a devout member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and it was her strong faith that helped her through the many hardships she encountered in her life.

She is survived by two daughters, Marcie (Bill Dezeeuw) of  Holland, MN and Stephanie (Michael Sanders) of Gettysburg; four grandchildren;  seven great grandchildren; brother Bob Dean Voeltz (Helga) of Pierre, SD; sister Lana (Anthony Frederick) of Yankton, SD; brother Terry L. Voeltz (Jane) of Aberdeen, SD; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son Mark, daughter Kathleen, son Rikki, son Jimmy, sister LaVonne, brother Darrell, brother Marlo and his wife Shirley.

Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church building fund of Gettysburg, SD.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Joyce’s arrangements.
