Kirk Hansen, 50, of Gettysburg, passed away Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 9, 2012 at the Gettysburg High School Gym, Pastor Jeff Adel officiating. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, September 8, 2012 at the United Methodist Church, Gettysburg, with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service.
Kirk James Hansen was born in Huron, SD on May 2, 1962 to Elmer “Johnnie” and LaJean (Holzwarth) Hansen. He attended grade school in Howell, MI and graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1981. He continued his education at Mitchell Vo-Tech, becoming a licensed plumber.
Kirk returned to Gettysburg and joined his father in the family business, Hansen Septic Service. Johnnie retired in 1995 and Kirk purchased the business changing the name to Hansen Plumbing Inc.
Kirk was a very family oriented man, always showing pride in both Jayden and Erik’s accomplishments. He enjoyed hunting with the boys, collecting items and most recently motorcycling.
Kirk also gave of his many talents to the Gettysburg Volunteer Fire Department, serving for 20+ years. During that time he has served as fire chief and assistant fire chief.
Kirk’s life will be cherished by his son, Jayden of Agar; mother, LaJean Hansen of Gettysburg; his siblings: Karla (Steve) Reedy of Pinckney, MI and Kyle (Gillian) Hansen of Poulsbo, WA; nieces: Stephanie Hardesty, Kendra Hansen and Kori Hansen; nephews: Kevin Reedy and Casey Hansen; five great nieces and nephews and his aunt and uncle, Leon and Delphine Rogers of Gettysburg.
Kirk was preceded in death by his son Erik; father, Johnnie Hansen; and his paternal and maternal grandparents.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent to the Gettysburg Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 27, Gettysburg, SD 57442 or to the Kirk Hansen Memorial Fund, c/o Great Western Bank, 111 N.E. St., Gettysburg, SD 57442.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Kirk’s arrangements.

I am so sorry to hear of Kirk and Erik’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with LaJean, Jayden, Kristi and the rest of the Hansen family. I have many fond memories of working with Kirk and Johnnie at the shop. They will always have a special place in my heart.
I have many fond memories of Kirk. What a fun loving man he was. Always a smile and kind words. He was truly one of the good guys. He will be missed by all whose lives were blessed enough to have him touch.

My deepest condolences to the family of Kirk and Eric. I was a class mate and friend of Kirk’s. I have never met or know a finer man, he will be greatly missed. And Eric, what a tragic end to what would have been a long beautiful life. Words just cant express the loss. May God be with them both on their final journey.
Never a bigger heart or a bigger smile then Kirk’s! Hard to understand why he was taken from us so soon. Many loved Kirk and many lives were touched by him. I will never forget him! He has a special place in my heart forever more.

We heard of the incident yesterday as my brother was the one who pulled him out of the lift station. We have been praying for you since and so sad to hear that he had passed. Know we are continuing to pray for you and all of your family. What a difficult time for you all. May God uphold you and give you what you stand in need of.

We are saddened to hear the news of Kirk and Erik. Although there weren’t many chances to see and visit with Kirk, as a graduating classmate of his in 1981, I regret not having those chances. The Prayer of St Francis says that “in dying we are born to eternal life”. That is our prayer today – that Kirk and Erik have experienced eternal life together. May they rest in God’s mercy and peace.

Kirk always had a special way in which he could brighten up anyone’s day with his smile,laughter and playfulness. He had the strength and wisdom of a man with the big loving heart of a boy. He was truly a good man and well loved friend of ours who will be sadly missed, but will forever live within our hearts.
Kirk and Erik touched many life’s and left us with great examples of unselfish acts of kindness and love within the community and would only want us to continue to do the same.
May you feel God’s loving arms wrapped around you ,comforting your hurting hearts. May God’s promise of someday being reunited with our loved ones who have traveled ahead of us bring hope where the heartache lies .
