Lawrence John Poeppel was born in Hoven, SD on July 22, 1949 to Herman and Betty (Lemler) Poeppel. He grew up in Gettysburg, graduating from Gettysburg High School in 1967. On October 28, 1966, Larry married Patty Simon, to this union a daughter and son were born. On July 10, 1987, Larry married Julie Heim and had two sons.
Following high school graduation, Larry spent his life farming and ranching on his own and with family; including his father Herman, his brother Robert A. With entrepreneurial dreams, Larry was part of several businesses surrounding multiple industries. These businesses included a canvas/tarp repair service; hay grinding, Zebroski-Poeppel Sheep, the Ranch Amusement Park, North Bryson Street RV Park, and he also helped with his children’s businesses. Some of his passions included vehicle restorations, mechanical design work, boating, camping, fishing, hunting, gardening, playing guitar, riding motorcycles, watching Nascar and OU football, keeping up-to-date on latest technology, grape growing, cooking, and providing sweet corn for family and friends. He was considered the “Grill Master” of the family and enjoyed spending time with them. He was also a motocross crew chief for his kids and grandkids. His story-telling and quick-wit will be fondly remembered by his family. In the last year, Larry and Julie, having both retired, purchased their retirement home on Richmond Lake near Aberdeen and spent a majority of time there with Taylor, their beloved black lab.
Those left to cherish Larry’s life are his wife, Julie, of 27 years; children: Barbara (Dave) Fritz of Rapid City, Rob (Jami) Poeppel of Rapid City, Adam Poeppel of Sioux Falls, and Nate Poeppel of Aberdeen; grandchildren: Alex and Amanda Fritz, Dominic, Joe, and Lauren Poeppel all of Rapid City; mother, Betty Poeppel of Gettysburg; siblings: Dan Poeppel of Spearfish, Louise (Greg) Kalicki of Skiatook, OK, Brenda (Don) Habbe of Rapid City, Rob (Monica) Poeppel of Gettysburg, and Bryan Poeppel of Shakopee, MN; brothers and sisters-in-law: Larry Heim of Orange, CA, Laura (Jim) Smiley of Omaha, NE, Alice (Gary) Valiquette of Victoria, BC, and Patricia Patton of Gillette, WY, and many nieces and nephews.

So sorry to. Hear of your loss. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
The Comeau family is both shocked and saddened by the news of Larry’s passing. Our farmland has been part of the Poeppel farming operation in Potter County for many years. Larry and his brother, Rob, were always excellent stewards of the land, treating it as if it were their own. My mother thought highly of the two brothers and before her death requested that they would be pall bearers at her funeral. We would like to convey our deepest condolences to Julie and the entire Poeppel family. We know that Larry will be sorely missed by his family and the Gettysburg community .
Very sorry about Larry’s passing. Will pray for his family during this very difficult time.
Barb, Dave & Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of sorrow!
