Lawrence Grunewaldt

Lawrence A. Grunewaldt, 95, of Faulkton, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen.
Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 17, 2017 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Faulkton, with Father Christopher Hughes, celebrant. Burial followed in St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery. A wake service began at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 16, 2017 at the church with visitation one hour prior.
Lawrence August Grunewaldt was born April 28, 1921, at home, to August and Minnie (Zapp) Grunewaldt. He was raised west of Faulkton and graduated from Orient High School. Following high school, Lawrence moved to the west coast where he worked for some time before returning home.
Upon his return, Lawrence met his future wife, Dorothy Wieseler, at a dance in Orient. They were united in marriage on June 10, 1947, and were blessed with five children. They raised their family on the Cold Spring Ranch west of Orient. Along with farming, Lawrence raised Hereford Cattle and loved his John Deere tractors.
He was an active 4-H leader and served on the Spring Township Board. Lawrence enjoyed spending time playing cards, going to dances, and dressing in costume for Mardi Gras. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Orient, where he served as an usher for many years.
In 1981, Lawrence and Dorothy moved to Faulkton; where they spent the rest of their retirement years gardening, traveling, delivering meal on wheels and USDA commodities. At times, he was still called to help out on the farm.
Those left to treasure his life are his three sons: Paul (Jan) Grunewaldt of Sioux Falls, Ken Grunewaldt of Hayti, and John (Nancy) Grunewaldt of Pierre; a daughter, Joyce Grunewaldt of Eagle Butte; grandchildren: Kevin (Amanda), Brian (Amy), Chad (Ann), Kim, Brett, Aaron and Ashley Grunewaldt; great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; daughter, Cecelia (John Murphy) Grunewaldt; brother, Leo Grunewaldt; and nephew, James Grunewaldt.
Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Lawrence’s arrangements.

Uncle Lawrence and Aunt Dorothy were two special people to me, in many ways. Many fond memories of 4H activities, family gatherings, and trips to Woonsocket. I miss them both.
