Lawrence Thiel, 83, of Miller passed away Thursday, August 9, 2018 at his home in Miller.

A graveside service was  held at 4:00 p.m., Friday, August 17, 2018 at Hillcrest Cemetery, Miller, with Fr. Paul Josten officiating. Reception followed at Turtle Creek Saloon.

A Celebration of Life will be held in October.

Larry was born on September 25, 1935 to Henry and Esther (Velder) Thiel. He graduated from Fairfax High School in 1955 earning letters in both football and basketball. Larry then served in the Army until his honorable discharge in October of 1963.

He had a part working on dams including Ft. Randall and Gavin’s Point. Larry was also a steel and iron worker in Seattle, where he was a member of the Local #86 Teamsters. Larry once owned the current Turtle Creek Saloon with Ray Sommer (Lar-Ray’s) and then later with his brother, Joe.

Larry and Lorraine (Lori) Griffin were married on December 12, 1987 in Everett, WA. They moved to Miller in 1995 and enjoyed having family and friends over to eat and drink and loved to hunt and fish.

Larry is survived by his stepson, Jason (Brenda) Griffin of Canby, OR; step grandchildren: Hunter, Dylan and Reagan Griffin; brother, Joe (Judy) Thiel; sister, Corrine Krueger; nieces and nephews: Cyril (Charlene) Haveman, Paul (Pam) Thiel, Boyd (Ann) Thiel, Jackie (Gary) Washecek, Jean (Bob) Sinkbeil, Paula (Ray) Lange, Staci (Mike) Aesoph, and Holli (Chip) Doss.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lori in 2004; parents, Henry and Esther Thiel; brother, Clarence Thiel; and sisters: Marian Haveman and Helen Guthmiller.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Larry’s arrangements.

  2. I remember Larry when he owned Larry’s Pool Hall and card room. He was always a very pleasant and fun person to be around. My sincere condolence to Larry’s family. He will always be remembered by those who knew him over the years. Gary Davis.

  4. Favorite Larry memory was 2 years ago we stopped at his house for Halloween and he didn’t have any candy so he gave my son a sailboat. One of those from the 70’s. He said, "like that son of a b*#@% then take it!"Great memories. Lots of cocktails in his kitchen with the TV blasting! Cheers, Larry! Lots of love from the Beranek Family
