He grew up on the rural Tolstoy family farm, attended Fairview Township Country School and received his higher education from South Dakota State College in Brookings. Leland returned to the family farm where he lived until the time of his death.

On June 9, 1957 he was united in marriage to Iris Titze at Christ Lutheran Church in Lebanon.

Leland’s entire life was centered around farming, cattle and the love of the land. He worked day in and out on the farm until his health left him unable to even get into a tractor which happened only a few short months ago.

Each day Leland looked forward to the daily stock report from his grandson. He also enjoyed watching baseball, cheering on the Twins, and spending time with his family.

He was a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church of Lebanon, where he served as the church secretary/treasurer. He was also served as a County Courtman for the FSA office.

Leland is survived by his children: Thomas (Tammy) of Tolstoy, Paul (Lynn) of Pierre and Beth (Mark) Dutt of Pierre; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his special lady friend: Linda McRoberts of Lebanon and siblings: John (Linda) of Volga and Marilyn (Larry) Mattheis of Pierre.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Iris; brother, Obert and sister, Leota Stotz.

  2. Norma Jean Merrill Gourlie says:

May God’s love give you great comfort at this time of sorrow.

I have many fond memories of having Leland for a friend as we grew up in Lebanon. Sharing our christian faith being one of them. His wife Iris was one of my best friends. I am happy to say they were both a part of my SD life. Last time I saw Leland was at the Lebanon 125th celebration several years ago.
