Leona M. Bertsch, 88, of Miller, died Sunday, May 6, 2007 at the Miller Good Samaritan Center.
Funeral services were held at 10:00a.m., Friday, May 11, 2007 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Miller with Rev. Bob Ohnstad officiating. Burial was in St. Lawrence Cemetery, directed by Reck Funeral Home of Miller. Visitation was held from 3:00-7:00p.m., Thursday, May 10, with a 7:00p.m. prayer service at the Reck Funeral Home.
Leona Marie Christman was born January 26, 1919 at New England, North Dakota to Fred and Martha (Leder) Christman. The family moved to Martin, South Dakota and later to Miller. She attended rural schools in both areas and worked for the Reck and Graham families.
On September 29, 1938 she married Ewald H. Bertsch at Huron. They made their home on a farm North of St. Lawrence for over 55 years. They enjoyed traveling over the years, having been in nearly every state, including Alaska and Hawaii. They spend many winters in the southern states, but the most were in Apache Junction, Arizona. They moved to Miller in the fall of 1994 and Ewald passed away that winter while they were in Arizona.
Leona enjoyed many hobbies, including sewing, quilting, and crocheting afghans and doilies, both for her family and to show at the State Fair. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Miller, where she was active in Hope Circle and the women’s quilting group. She was also a member of the Lost Creek Stars Extension Club. She loved to have her grandchildren and great grandchildren visit at her home.
She spent several months each winter with her daughter Shirley in Fort Worth, Texas. She moved to the Courtyard Villa in June of 2006 and in November 2006, she became a resident of the Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller.
Leona is survived by her daughter: Shirley Collins of Forth Worth, TX; sons: Roger (Myrna) Bertsch of St. Lawrence and Gary (Beth) Bertsch of Easton, PA; nine grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; sister Violet Kleinsasser; brother Renold Christman; sister-in-law: Mildred Christman, Ruth Bertsch, and Erma Bertsch; and brother-in-law Theophil Kost.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ewald in 1995; two sisters: Dorothy Christianson and Elsie Kost; five brothers: Fred, Jake, Ed, John and Donald Christman; and one son-in-law: Jesse Collins.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren: Randall Bertsch, Kent Bertsch, Marty Bertsch, Suzanne Keck, Dianne Neyens, Kenneth Black, LeAnn Meredith, Eric Bertsch, and Khristopher Bertsch.
Janice Kost will play the organ with Bill Kost as soloist.

We want you to know that you and the Family are in out prayers. We will not be at the funeral because we will be in Minnesota at our Granddaughters graduation.
