Leura Byrdine Cary was born April 20, 1932, on her maternal grandparents’ farm near Hayes Center, Nebraska to George and Marie (Goodrich) Cary. She attended school at District 7 in Hayes County, graduating from the eighth grade there, and later attended Hayes County High in Hayes Center, where she graduated with a teaching certificate. Leura taught in a country school with eight students.
In 1950, Leura married Robert Nitsch, and they had one child, Roberta Jean. In 1969, she married Donald “Buck” Lewis. They lived in several states as Don drove truck and went where there was work. Leura had a CDL and drove with Don for a time. Their home was primarily in South Dakota. They moved to Redfield in 2011 and made their home there.
Leura had a deep love for horses, dogs, and the many pets she cared for throughout her life. She found joy in sewing, knitting, and gardening, and took pride in her work at Darrell Johnson’s 212 Café, where she worked for several years as a cook. Above all, Leura cherished her family, and her greatest joy in life was her husband, daughter, and grandchildren, who were truly the loves of her life.
