Louie Gortmaker, 79, of Henry, formerly of Miller, died Saturday, December 13 at the Prairie Lakes Healthcare Center in Watertown. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 17 at the First United Methodist Church in Miller with Rev. Mark Johnsen officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 16 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Rembold Funeral Home in St. Lawrence.
Louie Gortmaker was born on October 6th, 1935 to John & Hazel (Gussler) Gortmaker in Hand County on the farm. He grew up in Hand County and attended school through the 8th grade, then helped with the farming. He worked for Lien Construction. He then married Mardella Tiff on January, 4th, 1958 in California. He worked for Smith Tool in California until moving back to Miller, SD in 1958. Louie worked for Meriwether Vet for many years then worked for the Hand County Highway Department until his retirement in 1981 due to health problems. He also helped out at Turtle Creek and the Miller Sale Barn. The Prairie Lakes Hospital Dialysis Unit staff and patients were his second family.
He was a member of United Methodist Church, Miller SD. He loved playing cards, going to the sale barn and spending time with his grandchildren, great grandchildren and was very excited about meeting his first great great granddaughter.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Mardella Gortmaker of Henry, SD, daughter Roxanne (Fain) Geiger, of Henry, SD, grandchildren, Alyssa (Earl) Rhody of Clear Lake, SD, Kelby (Toni) Goodall, of Henry, SD, great grandchildren Tierra (Brian) Rhody Breese of Watertown, SD, Hayley and Travis Goodall of Henry, SD and soon to be Great Great Granddaughter Zaliah Marie Louise Breese, sisters Rosemary (Lyle) Goodall and Harlan (Jean) Gortmaker of St. Lawrence, SD, Anita (John) Beaner and Shirley (Ed) Sell of Miller, SD, Viloet (Dick) Deuter of Rapid City, SD, Lulabelle (Jack) Shuler of Cody, WY, Pearl (Paul) Schlechter of Orient, SD and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his infant son Randy Gortmaker, parents John and Hazel Gortmaker, sister Karen Ruml, brothers Jackie Gortmaker, Jerry Gortmaker and Benny Gortmaker, an infant sister, sister in law Janice Battest, brother in law Keith Tiff, many nieces and nephews.

I only knew Louie for a short time but we are really going to miss him. Our thoughts and prayers sent your way in this time. He will no longer be suffering and in pain and he can do all the things he loved doing!!

Mardella, Roxanne and family, so sorry to here about Louie. He is at piece now and knowing him, he would never been happy completely confined to a wheel Chair. May God wrap his arms around all of you and help you through the upcoming days, but remember the good and fun times. He was a beloved husband, a loved Grandfather, Great-grandfather and Great Great-grandfather, and a beloved friend.
He will be greatly missed by family and friends but he will live on forever in our hearts.
We love you with all our hearts. We know that you will continue to watch over each and everyone of us.
I am so thankful that I got to know all of you! I know Louie is riding horse at the sale barn! Will so miss my visits… but so thankful that Louie is walking freely and pain free!!
I never got to know Uncle Louie…and I feel it is a great loss. May the stars in heaven open for him to look down upon the ones who love him. Rest in paradise Uncle Louie!
Mardella, Roxanne and family! We are saddened to hear about Louie passing away. It is never easy to say good-bye to one who is loved so much! Louie is no longer in pain and is resting in our Father’s arms. He is singing with the angels and praising God! May God’s loving arms surround you and keep you in His care today and always. Tears are shed now, but the joy will come when we meet our loved ones again!!!

Ron and I want to offer our sympathy to the family. I remember meeting a Louie and a lot of your family over the years. Its hard to lose siblings and you have lost your share already. May God offer his comfort and reassurance of meeting each other again in heaven.
So sorry for your loss. I have so many wonderful memories of Louie. My dad and I and Louie had some great hunting adventures so many laughs,I will always have a place in my heart for him he was a great man.May god comfort you in these hard times, I know him and my dad will be laughing once again. rest in peace GREAT WHITE HUNTER you will be dearly missed !!
well i think this is the hardest thing that i have ever done. dad i love you with my heart. i have many memories so that i cant pick and choose.i know that you no longer in any pain and that there are many angels looking over you. i think that you and your brothers and sister and vince are having a great time and keeping those angels and god on there toes.you are walking and pain free. love you. i will take care of mom.wish you could of made it for you to meet your great great granddaughter zaliah.i will tell her about you so she will know you. love you dad your daughter roxanne
Louie was a wonderful cousin. I enjoyed babysitting for him & Mardella. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
