Louis W. “Louie” Hagenlock, 92, of Gettysburg, passed away Monday, January 16, 2012, at the Oahe Manor in Gettysburg, SD.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 19, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Gettysburg, with Pastor Jeff Adel officiating.  Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery at Seneca, with military honors.  Visitation was held from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 18, 2012 with the family present, at Luce Funeral Home in Gettysburg.

Louis Hagenlock was born February 6, 1919 in Grinnell, IA to Waldemar “Walt” and Della (Grimm) Hagenlock. The family moved to Seneca in 1924.

In March 1939 Louie married Pearl Roseland. To this marriage two children were born, Eileen and Joyce. Pearl passed away at the age of 28.

Louie enlisted in the United States Army serving in the Pacific Theater, during WWII from 1944-1946.

On July 14, 1949 he married Rose Barondeau and to this union three children were born: Joane, Ruth and Lewis.   They made their home in Seneca where they owned and operated a gas station for several years.

The family moved to Gettysburg where Louie worked for Standard Oil and later as a car carrier driver. In the 1950’s he and Gary Bliese built a repair shop where he worked on vehicles and operated a tow truck. Louie owned and operated the repair shop until purchasing the Medicine Rock Café, with his wife, in 1966. He and Rose operated the Rock until 1982. During Louie’s breaks he worked on his masterpiece invention, “The Air Cycle” and other inventions in the back of the Rock. During his retirement years, Louie did farm work for Jim Brown, Rob & Larry Poeppel and Paul Nelson.

Louie was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Gettysburg Volunteer Fire Department and served as a member of the Gettysburg City Council.

Grateful to have shared in Louie’s life are his daughters: Joane (Art) Beringer of Gettysburg and Ruth (Doug) Koch, of Spokane, WA; one son, Lew (Melody) Hagenlock of Greeley, CO; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one sister, Ellen (Nolen) Cogswell of Joaquin, TX; brothers: Carl of Onaka, Del (Donna) of Gettysburg, Les of Bozeman, MT, Glen and Roger (Bonnie) of Pierre.

He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives: Pearl & Rose; his daughters: Joyce in infancy and Eileen (Clair) Maroney; granddaughter, Jodi Beringer Larabee and one brother, Edwin.

It was Louie’s wishes that there be no flowers.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Louie’s arrangements.

I will miss Louie very much every time I would walk by his dinner table at the Manor he would have a smile on his face and great me with a nice hello no matter how he felt.Cherish all the memories and laughters you have I know I will. May God Bless you all I know Louie will be watching us all from his new home with God.

  3. I work with Louie for several years at the Medicine Rock he was a great boss there were alot of good times had while learning the true meaning of hard work.It was an honor knowing Louie and working for/with him. He will be missed by all.

  6. I offer the sincere condolences of my family and I. Loosing a loved on in death is never easy. Despite how difficult this situation is please continue to look to the God of all comfort as he is described at 2 Corinthians 1:3,4. Only he can provide you with the comfort needed to cope. I hope these thoughts and scriptures have been as much of a comfort as possible.

    I just learned of your dad’s passing and it made my heart hurt. So many years of living next door to your wonderful father. He was such a sweet man, always with a warm smile and twinkle in his eye. He’s now in heaven with your mom and my folks. I know they are playing whist.
