Margaret Betty Ames was born on December 14, 1917, to Roland and Olga Victoria (Melberg) Ames. She was one of eight children. The family moved from Marcus, Iowa, to farms in Minnesota and South Dakota during the Depression. Margaret graduated from high school in Verdi, Minnesota. She graduated from Mankato State University in 1943 with a degree in Elementary Education.
Margaret worked in the defense industry in San Pedro, California, during WWII, helping build the Lockheed P-38 Lightning pursuit (fighter) planes. She enjoyed commenting that her wartime work was as Rosie the Riveter. While working there she established a life long friendship with Lupe Torres and her husband.
Margaret taught fourth grade in Rochester, Minnesota, for many years and was very active in the Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester, where she served in many positions, including singing in the choir. She moved to the family farm in Astoria, South Dakota, when she retired from teaching, to a new farm home that she had built for her father. She planted many beautiful trees and rose bushes, and she enjoyed going for long walks and playing the piano. She was active in Bethel Lutheran Church.
Margaret has spent the past several years in the loving care of the Good Samaritan Center in De Smet, South Dakota, close to her niece Carmen Marie and her family.
Margaret kept close ties to her family: her mother and father, her eight brothers and sisters, and eighteen nieces and nephews. She spent many holidays with her family. She loved Christmas carols, one of her favorite being “Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella”. When she said grace, you knew that the meal and everyone at it had been blessed! Margaret was a very spiritual, loving, Christian woman with a kind soul. She was always willing to give help to anyone in need, whether family member, friend, or deserving charity.
She is survived by her brother Dean and his wife Imogene, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and sister-in-law Peggy Ames of Palm Springs, California. She was preceded in death by her parents Roland and Olga Victoria Ames, sisters Carmen Luze, Gladys Darr, and Alta Loges, and brothers Sherman Ames, Avery Ames, and Robert Ames.
Margaret was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and teacher. Blessed be her memory.

To see her obituary was quite a surprise. She was my 4th grade teacher in Rochester, MN Hawthorne Elementary School Thanks to her I became a singer! God Bless her. I will always remember her Daniel Blakley
I remember her as an excellent and fair minded teacher. She had a dedication to her calling which I remember to this day.
My 4th grade teacher. An incredibly caring woman. She put me in a corner with a full bookshelf because I was so bored and “active.” She incorporated the Bible Story Books and truly influenced my life. A true Christian woman.
