Mark Hague, 88, of Highmore, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Highmore Health in Highmore, SD.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 4, 2015 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Highmore with Pastor Terry Knudson officiating. Burial followed in the Highmore Cemetery. Visitation was held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, May 3, 2015 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Highmore.

Mark Edward Hague was born May 27, 1926 to Alton Arrington and Margaret (Smith) Hague in Highmore, SD. He was the third of four brothers. Mark lived his entire life in Hyde County, attending rural grade schools in Van Order and Wm. Hamilton Townships. He graduated from Highmore High School in 1944.

On July 6, 1950, Mark married the love of his life, Mary Jean Dittman, daughter of Friedrich and Augusta (Kempf) Dittman. They lived and ranched northeast of Highmore in Wm. Hamilton Township for fifty years. They were blessed with four children: Joanne, Janet, Connie and Randy during their 59 years of marriage. Mark and Mary loved to dance, especially to the “Blue Skirt Waltz” and any polka the band played. Together they were members of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Highmore.

In 1998, Mary and Mark retired and moved into Highmore. Mark continued to work on the ranch he so loved. Mark was a tiller of his soil, a tender of his livestock, and a faithful steward of all that he had. He was no stranger to hardship as a child of the 1930’s nor to tragedy with the loss of his brother Floyd during the war. Mark is remembered for his honesty, kind nature, and unfailing work ethic. He was highly intelligent and an avid reader on a wide variety of subjects.

Mark was a man who did business with a smile and a handshake. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and friend who was quick to see the humor and appreciate a laugh around the dinner table.

Mark’s memory will be cherished by his four children: Joanne Hague of Jackson, WY, Janet (Michael) Gresh of Winston-Salem, NC, Connie (Tom) Birdwell of Middletown, OH and Randy (Kelly) Hague of Highmore; his grandchildren: Amy Putnam of Charlotte, NC, Charlie Putnam of Stephenville, TX, John Gresh of Winston-Salem, NC, Amanda Birdwell of Cincinnati, OH, Mark Birdwell of Destin, FL and Tracy, Kaitlyn and Mark Hague of Highmore; and his brother: Frank Hague of Placentia, CA.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary; his parents, Alton and Margaret Hague; and two brothers: Kenneth and Floyd Hague.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Mark’s arrangements.
