Marvin Simon, 86, of Gettysburg, passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gettysburg with Fr. Jerry Kopel officiating. Burial followed at St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Hoven. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 29, 2010 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.

On July 29, 1923, Marvin Simon was born at Springs Township, South Dakota to Edward and Mary (Wickert) Simon.

He was united in marriage to Elvina C. Knecht on May 20, 1947 at Hoven, SD and to this union four children were born.

Over the years, Marvin has been a member of the National Farmers Organization, Lebanon School Board, served on the Potter County Weed Board, ASCS Committee and the Natural Resources and Conservation Service.

In his spare time he loved to fish, golf, hunt, play cards and enjoy his family. He also loved to keep up on the national news, rarely missing Meet the Press.

Marvin’s life is cherished by his wife: Elvina of Gettysburg; four children: Gregg (Sharon Morgan) Simon of Mobridge, Rick (Imelda Schmidt) Simon of Gettysburg, Sharon (Mark) Mulder of Sioux Falls and Tim (Sandy Boik) Simon of Webster; ten grandchildren: Shane Simon and friend Sean Kittrell, Brent (Jackie) Simon, Tashina (Ben) Frerichs, Lonnie (Nancy) Simon, Darrin (Sally) Simon, Michael (Natalie) Mulder, Melissa (Matt) Guiliano, Chad (Suzy) Simon, Chris (Debbie) Simon and Jeremy Simon; ten great grandchildren; two siblings: Bernadine Hanley of Huron and Melvin (Fran) Simon of New York; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Simon of Bismarck, ND and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Art, Albert, LeRoy and Norbert and one sister, Lorraine Hansen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Sacred Heart Church Parish Hall building fund.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Marvin’s arrangements.

  5. Dear Simon Family,
    It was with sadness that we heard of Marvin’s passing. He was a true friend and not just one of my patients. I think we used to talk more fishing than medicine when he came to see me. The truth was that a lot of what he had, there wasn’t much we could do about, but we chatted and laughed and shared secrets of the latest walleye bite… we will miss him. Looking forward to seeing you when we are home in a few months.
