Marvin David White Wolf was born on July 10, 1968 in Eagle Butte, South Dakota to Sadie White Wolf. He attended Head Start and Elementary school in Red Scaffold. After graduating eighth grade, Marvin attended Dupree High School graduating in 1987.
After high school, Marvin worked with a construction crew from 1987 to 1989 that had built the Takini School. Upon completion of this project, he traveled with the crew to work out of Lemmon, SD. Throughout the later years he became an apprentice for plumbing, electrician, and masonry later on. Marvin also learned the trade of carpentry and welding throughout the years working in different types of construction.
Growing up, Marvin enjoyed participating in the 4H club and playing grade school basketball. As he grew, he liked riding horses. He owned a lot of horses, and his favorite horse was named after him, “Big Dode”, who competed in many rodeos including GPIRA and traveling to the INFR. Marvin played softball, pitched horseshoes, fished in the summer, and hunted in the fall. He took an interest in photography and was forever taking pictures of events, his nieces, nephews, and his grandkids.
In 1999, Marvin began working at Takini School in the maintenance department. He had worked there for 17 years, up until his passing. He most recently received a service award from Takini School for his many years of work.
Marvin was a very gifted individual with many talents and skills. Not only was he a “Jack of All Trades”, he was a great mechanic. He loved working with his hands, making anything from TV stands and benches to dream catchers and beautiful spirit horse sticks. There wasn’t a thing that Marvin could not do. Even if there was something of a challenge to him, he would simply work to master it as well.
Marvin was a man of great and noble character; a man who lived to honor our Lakota values. He was the one that we all learned to depend on when we needed something done. Whether it was big or small, he would help in any way he could. He loved to help get things ready for community events, either by cutting grass at the ball field, pow wow grounds, or helping rebuild at the rodeo grounds. Marvin was always helping to make sure that everything worked properly before it had started. He always wanted better for the community including Takini School. He started the Red Scaffold Volunteer Fire Department “West End”. He was also instrumental in getting a new gym floor for Takini School. His time and effort was given of himself without asking for anything in return.
Marvin will be greatly missed not only by his family, but by all those he has helped along the way. He had a sense of humor that he was known for. Knowing Marvin was a blessing. He was kind and humble. After a visit with him, you always left with a good feeling.
