Mary Schaefers, 98, of Miller and formerly of Polo, died Thursday, December 7, 2006 at the Hand County Memorial Hospital, Miller.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30a.m. Monday, December 11 at St. Liborius Catholic Church, Polo with Father John Helmueller officiating. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Polo, directed by Reck Funeral Home of Miller. Visitation was 2:00-5:00p.m. Sunday, December 10 at the funeral home with a 7:00p.m. wake service at the church.
Mary was born on a farm near Milesville, South Dakota on September 25, 1908 to Frank and Bertha (Dirndorfer) Gebes. Mary was raised in a devout Catholic family and she had four brothers and four sisters. She attended a country school through the eighth grade. During one summer, she worked for the Lawrence and Helen Sommers family and this is where she met her future husband, August Schaefers. They were married June 11, 1929 in a church that Mary’s father built. To this union, four children were born: Val, LeRoy, Marlene, and Eunice. They made their home one-mile east of Polo. August passed away in 1982 but Mary continued to live on the farm until 1990 when she moved into Miller.
She enjoyed card playing, doing cross word puzzles, gardening, family gatherings, and making quilts, which are spread throughout the United States. She was a member of St. Liborius Catholic Church in Polo.
Grateful to have shared in her life are her children: LeRoy (Donna) Schaefers of Polo, Marlene (Gene) Brueggeman of Miller, and Eunice (Joe) Reichling of Watertown; one brother: George (Fran) Gebes of Batavia, IL; one sister: Esther Simmons of Aurora, IL; 21 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband August; daughter Valeria Cotton Pfeifer, one granddaughter Kimberly Reichling; three brothers; and three sisters.
