Melvina Sporrer, 85, of Pierre and formerly of Highmore, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012 at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center, Pierre.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 27, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Highmore.  Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Highmore.  Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 26, 2012 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at the church.

Melvina was born February 20, 1927 to Joseph and Olga (Edelmann) Hirsch at Holabird, SD.  She attended school through the 8th grade in Highmore.  On February 7, 1948 Melvina married Gerald “Swede” Sporrer at Seneca.  To this union five children were born: Diane, Randy, Kevin, Tess and Trudy.  Melvina worked a majority of her life at the bowling alley in Highmore as a waitress and for a short time for Dick and Karen Kusser.  In 1997, she moved to Pierre to help her son Kevin run a motel he had purchased.  She retired in 2007.

In her spare time, Melvina enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning, and bingo.  She was known to be an excellent seamstress.  Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy; she loved spending time with them.

She is survived by four children: Diane (Larry) Dassinger of Vivian, Randy (Robin) Sporrer of Miller, Kevin (Susan) Sporrer of Pierre and Trudy Martin of Pierre; 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Proceeding her in death were her parents; husband, Swede on May 9, 1996; one daughter, Tess Sporrer; three brothers: Elwood, LeRoy and Joseph, Jr.; one sister, LaVonne and one grandson, Jason Dassinger.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Melvina’s arrangements.  .

    I have many great memories from working with Melvina at the bowling ally. I know that she will be missed. I hope that the family can find peace in knowing that she is comfortable and pain free now. She is rejoicing with those who passed before her…especially Tess who left this life way too early….what a reunion that must have been.
