Mercedes Jewett

Mercedes Jewett, 49, of Dillingham, Alaska and formerly of Eagle Butte, SD passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2010 in Dillingham.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m, MDT, Thursday, August 19, 2010 at All Saint’s Catholic Church in Eagle Butte, with Fr. Matthew Fallgren officiating. Burial followed at the Mossman Cemetery in Ridgeview. Rosary services were held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at All Saint’s Catholic Church in Eagle Butte.
Mercedes Mary Jewett is the second child of Orlin George and Kay Catherine Jewett who preceded her in death. She spent her early childhood in Streetsboro, Ohio and graduated from Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School in 1979. She earned her Associate Degree in Social Work from Haskell Indian Junior College. Her Bachelors Degree in Social Work was completed at the University of Kansas. Mercedes completed her education with a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Alaska-Anchorage.
Her career was spent working with at risk Indian children and adults in recovery. She had an undying commitment to help improve the lives of Indian people. She understood that people are sometimes affected by things they can’t control and found fulfillment in helping them regain control. At the time of her death in Dillingham, Alaska she was the program director for the Substance Abuse Program at the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation. She was highly regarded for her dedication, her sense of humor and the passion she had for helping people.
Above all Mercedes valued and enjoyed her family. Her happiest times were spent in the company of her family and friends. This is why holidays were her favorite times. She never missed a birthday and took special pleasure in celebrating the Christmas Season. She was truly a cherished light in the lives of those who love her.
Mercedes is survived by her brothers Clayton and Shannon, her sister Lorraine and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Mercedes arrangements.




Mercedes was my supervisor when I worked at the ANMC hospital. She was soft spoken and so kind. It was a shock to hear that she had passed on. My condolences to the family.
I so enjoyed working with you and being your neighbor in Anchorage. I am so glad I got to know you and most of all I’m glad you were a true friend. I’ll miss you dearly. Rest in Peace my friend. Love you. m
My thoughts and prayers are with Merch’s family. Although we were not in touch since 2002 who would have thought that would be the last time I’d get to see her. Mercedes was a true and faithful friend.
Mercedes was my supervisor at the Customer Services Department- Alaska Native Medical Center. I sure am glad that I got to know her and that the family and Mercedes will be in my prayers.
Mercedes, You will be missed dearly here at BBAHC. She was our Director for our department here in Dillingham. Thank you for all that you did for us here… Blessings.

I worked very briefly with Mercedes but admired her sensitivity, calmness, and listening skills. She will be missed. She is in my prayers. God Bless her.
It was a pleasure to work with Mercedes. She was quiet with a nice smile and always made time for you no matter how busy she was.

I want to send my condolences to the family of Mercedes. Mercedes was a model Social Worker – kind, caring and compassionate to those she served and worked with. I enjoyed knowing Mercedes through the MSW program and at ANTHC-she was so positive and gentle. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to know her. My prayers go out to her family and loved ones.
