Myrtle M. Zuber was born July 7, 1912 on a farm north of Gettysburg, South Dakota to William and Clara (Larson) Zuber. She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1930.
She helped on the farm until she married Claude Oaks on September 14, 1934 in Onida, SD. In April of 1935 they moved to Faulkton where Claude did carpentry work for Travelers Insurance and played baseball with the Faulkton ball team.
When World War II broke out three of her brothers were called into service so they moved back to help on the farm. Following her brothers return Claude and Myrtle rented a farm near Lake Hurley. Four years later her brothers pursued other interests, leaving their family to return to the home place where they helped her parents and also rented some other land. They later bought the home place.
In 1970 Uncle Sam called their son Alan to serve in the Vietnam War, so they retired and moved into Gettysburg.
Myrtle had a love for golf, baseball, cards and bowling where she won the 1982 state bowling tournament.
In January of 1987 Claude passed away and after a few years she moved into the Gettysburg apartment. In January of 2006 she entered the Oahe Villa and in January of 2007 she entered the Oahe Manor.
Left to cherish her life are her children: Marilyn Taylor of Coon Rapids, MN, Darrell (Bev) Oaks of Piedmont, SD and Gary (Judy) Oaks of Gettysburg; one daughter in-law, Janis Oaks of Watertown, SD; nine grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren; one sister: Gladys Myers of Faulkton, SD and one brother: Donald Zuber of Box Elder, SD.
