Nancy Joan Showalter, 77, passed away in the early morning hours on September 12, 2016 after losing her 21 yearlong battle with cancer.
Nancy was born in Highmore, South Dakota on Oct 9,1938 to Amos and Reina Bouzek. She graduated from Highmore High school in 1956 and then attended Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD for 2 years to obtain her teaching certificate.
She then made the big move to California and attended Cal State LA and UCLA for the next 2 years. She stopped just short of her degree to start her family. After the birth of Bryan and Chris she moved to Tri-Cities WA to be close to her sister, Sharon. She had 2 more children Susan Amy and Ben while living in Pasco. She always worked with children throughout her life whether it was running an in-home daycare or preschool, teaching religious education classes at the Catholic church, or teaching her children to cook, bake, can, fish, camp, laugh, and love life.
Nancy later went back to school and obtained her BA in Education from Eastern WA University in 1984. In 1989 she opened an in-home preschool where it was one of the happiest places on earth. Whether it was the time she’d purchase them all matching raincoats and went on adventures or having baby pigs in the house for them to bottle-feed or early childhood education they received, they all knew they were loved and felt like they belonged.
In 1995 she moved back to Highmore, South Dakota to care for her father after the death of her mother. She enjoyed her farm life while raising Cashmere goats. After her father passed she moved to Huntington Beach, California to be closer to her son, Chris. She lived there for a number of years before returning to Pasco, Washington.
She was devoted to her family, always putting them first and making sure they were happy. She loved to talk and tell a good story. She could and would spark up a conversation with people wherever she went. She was prone to fits of laughter when telling of her adventures. She always helped those in need whether friend or stranger. If she could help, she would. She was quick to forgive and never held a grudge. She loved with all her heart and wanted nothing more than to see everyone around her happy and well fed.
She is survived by her husband Carson Showalter of 40 years; her sisters Sharon Barklow and Bonita Stanley of Highmore, South Dakota; sons; Bryan Sheckler of Little Rock, Arkansas, Chris Sheckler of Huntington Beach, CA, Ben Showalter of Pasco, WA and daughter, Susan Mozzone of Maple Valley, WA; as well as her grandchildren Lindsey, Kylie, Donavon, Payton, Emily, Abigail and Erik and great-grandchildren Zayden, Bode and Paisley.
Nancy lived an amazing life, had a kind soul and will be sorely missed by many. Her children will host a gathering on September 24th at 2pm at the Pasco Best Western on 2811 N 20th Ave in remembrance of Nancy. We would be honored if her friends and family attended.
