Nicole Elizabeth Pekarek, 15, of Highmore, passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, due to the result of an automobile accident.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 19, 2016 at the Hyde County Auditorium in Highmore. Visitation began at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, September 18, 2016 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service, all at the Highmore Auditorium.

Nicole Elizabeth Pekarek was born October 25, 2000 to Jason and Joey (Aasby) Pekarek in Pierre, SD. Her older siblings, Taylor and Matthew, welcomed her with open arms. Even as the youngest of three, she was a spitfire. With her foxy grin and witty sense of humor, she could make anyone laugh. Whether she was playing cards with the older crew or playing hide and go seek with her younger cousins, everyone enjoyed her company. With her heart of gold, she touched those both young and old. Nicole had the keys to life and lived them, doing things we can all admire.

Nicole had an adventurous personality, if there was anything new to try, you can bet she was there. Her outgoing personality and willingness to be a part of all activities made it easy for her to make friends. Riding horse, being with her animals, especially her goats, working on the farm, drawing, her new found talent of beading, and hanging out with friends were some things she truly enjoyed. Her love for new things didn’t stop at home. She was a beloved student at Highmore High, trying her hand at almost every sport, including golf, and finding volleyball to be her favorite. She was a member of FFA, state FBLA officer, as well as a statistician for the boys’ basketball team.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Stephan, where she was an altar server. Nicole gave the greatest gift through her death by being an organ and eye donor.

Nicole will be greatly missed for many things, but her enthusiasm for life will never be forgotten.

Nicole is survived by her parents, Jason and Joey Pekarek of Highmore; sister, Taylor Pekarek of Brookings; brother, Matthew Pekarek of Highmore; grandparents, Janet Pekarek of Highmore, Keith and Corinne Aasby of Highmore; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her grandfather, Ronnie Pekarek.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her name at Heartland State Bank.

Luze Funeral Home of Highmore has been entrusted with Nicole’s arrangements.

  9. Jason and Joey: We are so very sorry for your loss. If I could fix this, I would. This is the hardest thing you are ever going do. I wish I could tell you you’ll get over this-you won’t. Time does, however, make the hurt a bit duller. Hang onto your memories, you will always have them. You may feel like you are forgetting-but you won’t. Give yourselves a break, you are going to forget to do things, or mess up somethings, its ok. You will heal in time. Just take one day at a time. Some will be harder than others. Don’t be afraid to ask for or accept help. To some helping is their way to cope. After some time, people will stop talking about Nicole, they don’t want to bring up your loss, so you remember and it upsets you. They don’t know you have never forgotten. They don’t know you think about her every moment of every day. Don’t be upset with them. Even family members will do this. They just don’t know. We are very sorry you had to go through this, May God bless you and yours and somehow bring you peace.
