Nina Myrene Reed was born November 14, 1916 in Faulk County to Hurl and Effie (Starr) Reed, the ninth of eleven children. She grew up in the Faulkton area where she attended the Reed Country School and graduated from Faulkton High School in 1936. After graduation Nina went to Illinois where she worked until her marriage.

On March 17, 1937, Nina met the love her of life, Ralph Herman, at a St. Patrick’s Day Dance in Miranda, SD. They were united in marriage on March 14, 1938, in Dubuque, IA. Following their marriage, they worked on a ranch in the Imperial Valley of Southern California. They returned to Faulkton on September 17, 1938 where they farmed and raised their family.

Nina was a member of the United Methodist Church, serving as their financial secretary for 22 years. She was also the treasurer of the Autumn Leaves Senior Center, a Cub Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, member of the Saratoga Susie’s Extension Club, member of the study club and first chairman of the Miriam Circle of the Methodist church. Nina was a 25+ year member of the Rebekah Lodge, Noble Grand of the Rebekahs in 1966 and 1978, and a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Nina taught herself to crochet, knit, tat and sew. She loved to embroider dishtowels, and crochet doilies; many people have been the recipients of these. All of her grandchildren covet a complete set of seven. Nina always had a happy, positive attitude and could be heard singing as she went about her work. To the end, she always said she dearly loved being a mother and she had a “good life”. The family is thankful for the “good life” she gave all of them.

Nina is survived by her daughter, Cherry (Eugene) Frasier of Faulkton, their children, Tannia (Kevin) Miller, Fargo, ND; Darla (Dave) Eichstadt, Huron, SD; Dale (Karen) Frasier, Spearfish, SD; Jayme (Amie) Frasier, Faulkton; daughter, Marlys’ daughter, Trisha Meek and her son, John Meek and daughter, Marina Kader, Faulkton; son, Gale (Holly) Herman, of Monticello, MN and their daughters Jessica (Adam) Schmidt, Winthrop, MN; Colleen (Grant) Johnson, St. Michael, MN; Margaret (Ryan) Denzer, Denver, CO; son, Glen Herman of Olathe, KS, and his daughters, Alicia (Robert) Terry, Overland Park, KS, Tara (Andrew) Springer, Overland Park, KS; grandson, Jerod Herman, Olathe, KS; many more great grandchildren; and one sister, Eileen Sesak of Salinas, CA.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; two infant children; daughter, Marlys (Spade) Cooley; son, Gene Herman; sisters: Florence Butler, Eva Kleffman, Keitha Bullock, Janet Elston, and Lois Uphoff; and five brothers: Marvin, Glenn, Leo, Delbert, Herschel and Wilmer.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. At times it seems like just yesterday I can remember seeing Nina sitting in a chair in the corner of her living room in the evening with the light on when one walked past her house. I extend my sympathy to the family of a very kind, sweet lady.

  2. Deepest sympathy to the family of Nina.

  3. Cherry and family,
So sorry to hear of your loss. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

  4. Thinking of all of you and sending our love and sympathy. Aunt Nina was special and precious to all of us and so glad for so many precious memories, know you will find comfort in remembering all the precious moments.

  5. I extend my sympathy to Cherry, Gale and Glen and your families and Marlys’s daughter. Nina was a lovely person and a great support to her family. I went to the Reed school one year and then on to Faulkton School so we had that in common. I went to the Herman place on a daily basis on the bus. It was the end of the route so the bus turned around in their yard. It was comforting to know who lived on the corner on the road to and from town in later years. She lived a long life. I think she is the last of that generation from our neighborhood. God bless you. Marlene Olson Wiekamp
