Pearl Ione Condon was born on May 10, 1932, in Cherry Creek, SD, to Silas and Mary (Ward) Condon. She was given the Lakota name “Pte San Waste Win” (Good White Buffalo Cow woman).
She married Emmett Hollow Horn April 1951 and September 1951 and had an instant family having gained a stepson, Zigmund. She soon had twins; Maurice and Mary, followed by Terrance, John, Candace, Veldon, and Janelle. They made their home on the Hollow Horn ranch near Rattlesnake Creek until 1973, at which time relocating to Red Scaffold community. In 1994, they moved back to the Hollow Horn Ranch for the rest of their lives.
Pearl was a lover of horses and an avid barrel racer in her younger days as remembered by her older children and friends. She also played softball, picking her last “grounder” when in 1982. She worked for the MCH and CHR programs for approximately 13 years; she was often called upon for serious emergencies until an ambulance arrived. She was honored as an LNI Community Service awardee and recognized as a NAIWA honoree. She served on the Tri-County Water Association board; first finishing her husband’s term, then, as a voted member since 1999. She was on the Wisdom Keeper board, and worked as a volunteer of the SD Foster Grandparent Program and recognized for her years of dedication; both of which she continued until her health issues intervened.
Pearl had a knack for sewing and whether she loved it or not, she was excellent at it. She was often heard saying “Ata! I made my foot-pedal sing” as she was a wiz on her old, but faithful, foot-pedal sewing machine. She could make anything out of fabric but mainly recognized for her skills at star quilt creations and hand-sewn quilting. She honored each of her grandchildren with one that reflected their talent and personality upon their high school graduations and enjoyed attending their school activities and watching them play sports. She taught her trade to granddaughter, Fancee, who was the only one with the patience to learn. She served as Godparent to many children and was the center of family dinner planning. Pearl was considered a hard woman, and had to be. She was a strong voice for her community, family, and friends.
Her pastimes included playing bingo, playing the video lottery and especially going to the casinos.
Pearl is survived by her children: Maurice Hollow Horn (Paulette), Mary Little Sky, Candace Hollow Horn, Janelle Hollow Horn; stepson, Ziggy Hollow Horn; adopted sons, Stanley Hollow Horn and Ira Blue Coat; immediate grandchildren: Marcus (Eunice), Maura (Kelly), Kaleb, Maurisa, Chaske, Eddie, Emmett, Aleta, Terrance, Fancee, Ann, Arita, ShaiLo, Brazee, Emme’Ray, Paul, Bonnie, John, Michael, Beulah, Kristan, Veldon Jr, Charles, Emily, Renata, Sonny, and, Luke Egna; full sister, Rita Woolard of CA; half-siblings: Bernadine, Jeanette, Madeline, Brayven (Merrill), Cyrus, Reggie, and Harold; aunt, Ellen In The Woods; and sisters-in-law: Mary (Andy) and Faye (Chet). She was also blessed with 35+ great grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.
