Phyllis Wise

Phyllis Wise, age 97, of Gettysburg, passed away, Friday, November 9, 2012 at the Oahe Manor, Gettysburg.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at the United Methodist Church, Gettysburg with Pastor Jeff Adel officiating. Burial followed in the Pembroke Cemetery, Hoven. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, November 12, 2012 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at Luce Funeral Home, Gettysburg.
Phyllis Zuber Wise was born July 24, 1915, in Lowell Township, Potter County, S.D. to Henry Zuber and Grace (Herron) Zuber. She was four years old when her father died in a drowning accident. The family continued to live on the farm and she received her grade school education in a one room school house. Phyllis graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1934.
She married Louis Martin Wise on October 2, 1936 in Gettysburg where she lived all her life.
Phyllis provided room and board for high school boys for many years. She worked at the Jones Drug for a short time before she and Louie purchased and operated the Gamble Store.
Phyllis served in a number of civic duties including being one of the founding members of the Medicine Rock Senior Citizens Center. She had been a member of the Gettysburg Hospital Auxiliary, the Gettysburg Historical Society, Extension Club, the Gettysburg Country Club, and for many years she served as volunteer curator at the Dakota Sunrise Museum which she helped establish. This was a job she greatly enjoyed.
Phyllis enjoyed dancing, golfing, bowling, playing cards and watching high school sporting events.
She is survived by her two daughters: Lu Ann (Ernie) Edwards of Watertown, S.D. and Karen (Jerry) Baldwin of Custer, S.D. She is also survived by five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two cousins: Eileen Hegerle and Lucille Ellenbecker of Gettysburg, and a special friend, Beryl Clark of Gettysburg.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Louie, both parents, her brother, Walton Zuber, and her sister, Renee Gesman.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Phyllis’s arrangements.

Phyllis Wise was always involved in the Gettysburg-Potter County community and was an avid history buff for most of her 97 years. She did many great things during her lifetime. My sympathies to her family and friends. God bless her…
