Richard Lyle Haskell, 78, of Eagle Butte, entered the spirit world on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at the Rosebud IHS Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 10:00a.m., MDT, Thursday, May 10 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Eagle Butte with Mother Marion Rechtenwald officiating. Burial was in St. Paul’s Episcopal Cemetery, LaPlant under the direction of Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte.

Richard was born December 1, 1928 to Sherman and Eunice (Sheppard) Haskell at Old Cheyenne Agency, where he grew up and graduated from high school. After high school, he attended Southern State College for carpentry. He then served in the US Army at Japan and was honorably discharged.

In 1965 Richard married Shirleen Horn. To this union two children were born, Sandra Haskell of Rosebud and Keith Haskell of Eagle Butte.

In 1966 he started working for the tribe at the CAP office until 1978 when he went to work for the Cheyenne River Housing Authority. He retired from the Housing Authority
in 1994.

Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to horse races, watching all sports on television, caring for his lawn and garden, but most of all, caring for his grandchildren and great grandchild.

He is survived by his daughter, Sandra; son, Keith; sister, Nellie Kintn of Everett, WA; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Joshua, Heather, Rikki, Terri Jo, and Kiana; one great grandchild, Latoya; many nieces and nephews; and one very special friend, Marge Dolphus.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Christine; four brothers, David, Charles Sherman, Cardinal and Calvin.
