Richard Scares The Hawk, Jr., age 45, of Eagle Butte, entered the Spirit World on Friday, May 7, 2010 at Eagle Butte, SD.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., MDT, Saturday, May 15, 2010 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Eagle Butte with LeRoy Bobtail Bear officiating. Burial followed in the Blackfoot Episcopal Ascension Cemetery. A wake service was held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 14, 2010 at the church.

Richard D. “Delaine” Scares The Hawk, Jr., was born August 22, 1964 to Violet Swimmer and Richard D. Scares The Hawk, Sr. at I.H.S. Hospital in Eagle Butte, SD.

Delaine lived his life in various places on Cheyenne River. When he was younger he lived with his aunt Bella White Eyes in Marksville, SD where he attended the Swiftbird Day School until the fourth grade. He and his siblings moved to Swiftbird with their mother. After living in Swiftbird for a short time they moved to Mobridge where he attended the Freeman Davis Elementary. While there in his junior high years he joined the basketball team. They then moved to Eagle Butte, where he enrolled at the Flandreau Indian School until the 10th grade. Here he met Alice Haukas. Delaine then dropped out of school. Two years later he attended Kicking Horse Job Corps for a short time. After leaving Job Corps he started a family with his long time girlfriend, Alice, from this relationship there were three girls born, Shawna, Sheila and Stephanie. After their separation he proceeded on and moved to Rapid City doing day labor. Here he met Georgia Pay Pay, from this relationship two sons were born, Wendall and Brent. Then they separated. He moved back to Eagle Butte, where he did some horse racing and took care of horses for friends, this was just part of his hobbies. In 2001 he met Karen Yellow Earring. To this relationship two girls were born, Destiny and Dessa.

While living in Eagle Butte Delaine joined the BIA Fire Fighting Crew. Along with this his hobbies included beading, hunting, fishing, taking his GED, finishing classes at the 4-Bands Healing Center, going on the Big Foot Ride as being one of the riders for four years. Delaine was inspired by many people but the one who inspired him the most was his cousin, Chris Rocky Black Bird who showed him how to hunt, fish and do other activities. Delaine lived his life here in Eagle Butte up to his untimely death.

Delaine is survived by his seven children; Shawna, Sheila and Stephanie of Wind River, WY, Wendall and Brent of Sioux Falls, and Destiny and Dessa of Eagle Butte; six grandchildren; two brothers, Duane (Kathy) Scares The Hawk of Albuquerque, NM and Tom Scares The Hawk of Pierre; two sisters, Della Scares The Hawk and Francine Red Bear of Eagle Butte; one uncle, Timothy (Marliss) Swimmer, Jr. of Wakpala; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; paternal grandparents, Sarah Red Dog and Sullivan Pretty Weasel, maternal grandparents, Imogene Red Crow and Timothy Swimmer, Sr.; five uncles and three aunts.

Luce Funeral Chapel of Eagle Butte has been entrusted with Richard’s arrangements.
