Rose E. Sterling, 90, of Highmore, passed Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at the Highmore Health in Highmore, SD.
Rose Elizabeth Carroll Sterling was born in Brooklyn New York on February 4, 1925 to Martin Howard Thomas and Helen Rosemary Carroll.
Childhood: She was orphaned at the age of 12, living with her Grandmother and then with her brothers Tom, Jim and sisters Helen, Patricia & Agnes in Woodhaven, Queens, New York. She attended St Thomas the Apostle parochial school and was in the first freshman class at the new Franklin K Lane High School graduating in 1943. She worked at Fairbanks Morse for several years.
Rose met Ross W Sterling roller skating during WWII and following a short courtship they married In New York. After the wedding they traveled by train to Washington, where Ross’ family resided.
They had 3 children; Jeanne born in 1947; Rosanne born 1954; and a son, Ross W. Junior.
She was divorced in 1961 and became a bookkeeper living in Ephrata, Washington until moving to Seattle in 1966 where she worked for several companies retiring from Piston & Rudder which was the predecessor to Auto Trader magazine in 1990.
She moved to Highmore, South Dakota at the age of 87 to live with her daughter Rosanne while recuperating from some health problems. She pronounced that road trip from Washington to South Dakota the best vacation of her life. She spent the past 2 years living at Highmore Health where she was kept busy with bingo, and card playing. A diehard Seattle Seahawks fan she was pleased to see them win the Superbowl in 2013.
She was preceded in death her parents, 5 siblings and her son Ross.
She has left behind both daughters: Jeanne Barlia (David), of Seattle, Washington; Rosanne Bryan (Michael) of Highmore, South Dakota; grandchildren Ryan Sterling of Edmonds, Washington (daughter Gwendolyn) Maryn Diehl of Highmore, South Dakota; (children, Owen and Jasmine) and Roslyn Besancon (Chris) (son Bennett Sterling) of Edmonds, Washington.

I am so sorry to hear about Rose. I will miss seeing her at the nursing home. I am sorry for your loss.
