June 21, 1930 ~ February 10, 2010
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 15, 2010 at the Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston with Pastor David Winterfeldt officiating. Burial followed at the Parkston Cemetery. Visitation was held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, February 14, 2010 with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.
On June 21, 1930 Ross Eugene was born to Ross Francis and Julia (Juracek) Crosley. At the time, the family was living in Springfield, SD but made their way by row boat to Santee, Nebraska for the birth of Ross. Shortly after the birth, they returned to their home in Springfield, SD.
On September 22, 1951 Ross was united in marriage to Alyene Ruth Johnson at Vermillion, South Dakota. They made their first home in Santee, Nebraska until moving to Hurley, SD to join Ross’s family on their farm. They helped run the farm until their move to South Sioux City, NE where he worked at a meat packing plant and also did construction with large road machinery. Following this they made a move to Parker, SD to take over the operation of the Crosley Bar from Ross’s folks and later purchased the bar in 1968. Their final move came when they relocated to Parkston where Ross and Alyene owned and operated the Crosley Bar until they sold it in the late 1970’s. In August of 1980, Ross began working for the City of Parkston in the street maintenance and water sanitation departments, retiring in October of 1992. In April of 1997, Ross returned to work at the city, helping them at the city landfill and then retired again in June of 2009.
Ross enlisted in the United States Army in August of 1948 and was honorably discharged in August of 1949. He reenlisted in September of 1950 and was again honorably discharged in August of 1951. During his enlistments, Ross served at Ft. Lewis in Washington and two tours of duty in the Korean War.
In his spare time, Ross enjoyed mowing the lawn, gardening, tinkering in his workshop, watching old western movies, and going to auctions. If he wasn’t bringing home treasures from the landfill, he brought them home from an auction.
He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and a life time member of the American Legion and VFW.
Ross’s life will be cherished by his wife, Alyene Crosley of Parkston; three children: David Crosley of Parkston, Diane (Bill) Pape of Freeman and Darla Crosley (Bruce) Rohrer of Graham, Washington; inherited children: Mike (JoAnn) Almond of Parker and Jerry (Mary) Merrill of Harrisburg; 16 grandchildren: Nicole Crosley of Kansas City, MO, Tanner Wells of Mitchell, Ashley Crosley of Omaha, NE, Landon Crosley of Kansas City, MO, Nancy (James) Lei of Rapid City, Jamie and Jillian Crosley of Sioux Falls, Dana Pape of Maple Grove, MN, Mandy (Joel) Luikens of Gettysburg, Tiffany (Kevin) Hofer of Miller, Lindsay (John) Neth of Tea, Brooke Pape of Freeman, Cory (Sally) Fisher of Yankton and Melissa Crosley of Sioux Falls, Jenny Almond of Sioux Falls and Stephen Almond of Parker; 11 great grandchildren: Danny Crosley, Carter and Collin Lei, Grant and Carter Luikens, Grace Hofer, John William Neth, Andrew Wicker, Selena Fisher and Akwein and Alei Riak; sister: Hazella (Glen) May of Niobrara, NE; brother: Ronald (Marjorie) Crosley of Yankton, SD; aunt: Evelyn Noreen of Illinois; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
