Sandy was born June 26, 1941 to Lloyd and Evelyn (Rowen) Phillips in Huron, SD. She was raised on a farm south of Wessington and attended rural grade school and high school in Wessington. On November 16, 1958, she married James Nielson at the Lutheran Parsonage in Wolsey, SD. To this union, three sons were born: Steve, Dave and Jeff.
She and Jim throughout their married lives lived in Highmore, Blunt and Park River, ND. She worked at the Highmore Healthcare Center for twelve years and the Park River School System for five years.
Sandy always had an enjoyment for sports. She loved watching football, especially the Minnesota Vikings, golf and Nascar racing. Whatever her grandchildren were involved in, she was there watching and enjoying. After her and Jim moved to Oacoma, she loved to sit by her window and watch the boats on the river and the wildlife around their house.
She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Highmore her entire married life, except for five years they lived in Park River, ND.
Grateful to have shared in her life is her husband, Jim of 51 years of Oacoma; sons: Steve (Lisa) of Blair, NE, Dave (Lisa) of Sioux Falls, SD, and Jeff (Dori) of Oacoma, SD; nine grandchildren: Mitchell, Cody, Cameron, Tyler, Travis, Crystal, Brittney, Cherissa and Jessica; and two brothers: Lee (Marilyn) Heller of Wolsey, SD and Jerry (Dianne) Phillips of Wessington, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Janet Mehling; and niece, Brenda Wong.
