Terry Sievers, 72, of Miller, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2016 at Avera Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller, after a brave struggle with cancer.

Memorial service with military honors was held at  2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Miller with Rev. Max Miller officiating. Burial will be at a later date in G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller. Celebration of life immediately followed at the Miller Community Center.

Terry was born February 21, 1944 in Jacksonville, Illinois to Paul and Velma (Phillips) Sievers. At the age of three, following his father’s death, he and his mother moved back to Wessington where he attended grade and high school, graduating in 1962. His formal education ended after two semesters at Northern College, when he began working for John McInnis at Dakota Plumbing and Heating; the start of a lifelong comradery and friendship.

He married Pamela Brandenburg on August 16, 1964. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a flight line mechanic from 1967-1971, serving a tour in Vietnam from 1967-68. During his years in the service, Terry was assigned to bases in Texas, Arizona, and Michigan. Their daughter, Lynn Paulette, was born in Amarillo, Texas and twelve years later a son, Branden Scott, was born in Huron, South Dakota.

Terry was proud of his Wessington heritage, but definitely made Miller his home. He understood the importance of community involvement, often taking on leadership roles in many organizations; Miller School Board (19 years), Music Parents, Jaycees, Youth Basketball, Boy Scouts, SnoGoers, American Legion, VFW, Honor Guard, and Masons. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, serving as a council member and council president.

Terry’s greatest love was his family. Always there to help and support when needed. He also enjoyed spending time at the cabin on Lake Poinsett, and working with his horses. He could often be found riding his horse, Johnny, or driving his team of half lingers, Dan and Don.

His is survived by his daughter, Lynn (Kevin) Watts of Miller, and his son, Branden Sievers of Volga; four grandchildren: Alexis and Nathan Watts of Miller and Ryan and Dylan Sievers of Madison; long-time family friend, Peggy McInnis of Miller; and many treasured cousins and family friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Paulette; and his parents-in-law, Ellwood and Margaret Brandenburg.

Reck Funeral Home of Miller has been entrusted with Terry’s arrangements.

A Memorial Service was held on January 11, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 707 East 1st Ave in Miller, South Dakota 57362

I can remember being at my grandparents’ (Gus and Amanda Rehbein) rural North Bend, Nebraska home when Terry would be visiting there with his parents. We also visited with Terry at Marvin Rehbein’s household auction — probably in the late 1990’s. May you cherish memories of special times together. 19. Brian and Tabatha Duxbury says:

Tabi and I are deeply sorry that we can’t make it to offer our condolences. Tabi was just remembering a time when Terry chased her with a window squeegee when she ran the gas station. They poked fun at each other all the time. He was truly one of a kind.

  20. Dear Family, My memories of Terry go way back to when I lived on a farm north and west of Wessington. He and his mom lived a short distance away. Terry shadowed my dad, Gerald McGirr, and spent many hours in our farm yard (now the Schilling place). My parents loved him like a son. And his mom, Velma, used to cut my hair. I cherish the few simple memories that I have of that farm. We moved to Highmore in 1956, but I never forgot Terry Sievers. May he rest in peace. With sympathy, sincerely, LaVaughn McGirr Busse

  21. Time passes and we go our own ways. But I’ll never forget special childhood memories with Butch and Terry at Grandma Marge and Grandpa Roy’s farm and at Velma’s place above the bank in Wessington. Deb and I got teased a lot but Terry kept us out of trouble. He helped us crawl under the porch to drag out new puppies. He didn’t tell on us when we jumped out of the haymow. From my earliest memories, I have many glimpses of Terry’s constant smile. Lynn, Branden and families, I hope you celebrate his life and the end of his suffering. Sadness is for us – not him, as Terry is in a better place.

  22. We are so sorry to hear of Terry’s passing. Will be keeping all of you close in our prayers. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

  23. Our deepest sympathy to Lynn and Branden and families. Terry was a long time friend from the Wessington years and later when he married my high school friend. He will be greatly missed. We are sorry we won’t be able to attend services as we are away from home until next week. Our prayers are with you all, we will be especially holding you up in prayer on Wednesday, as you say you last goodbyes. With sympathy, Terry and Jerry Meek
