Virgean McFarlane, 83, of Miller, died Monday, May 28, 2007 at the Highmore Healthcare Center.

Funeral services were held at 10:00a.m., Thursday, May 31, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church, Miller, with Pastor David Andrews officiating. Burial was in G.A.R. Cemetery, Miller, directed by Reck Funeral Home of Miller. Visitation was held from 3:00-7:00p.m., Wednesday, May 30 with a 7:00p.m., prayer service at Reck Funeral Home, Miller.

Virgean was born January 25, 1924 to William and Sena (Jepsen) Busse in Worthington, Minnesota. They lived in Bigelow, Minnesota later moving to Rock Rapids, Iowa and then to Spencer, Iowa. Jean graduated from Spencer High School.

She worked for the Spencer Daily Reporter where she met her husband Robert “Bob” McFarlane. They married on September 15, 1946 at the Methodist Church in Spencer, Iowa. To this union, four children were born: Gary, Doug, Bobbi, and Holly. They later moved to Mille Lacs, Minnesota where they ran the newspaper for a short time. They purchased the Miller Press in 1947 with partner George Williams and became sole owners in 1969.

Jean was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Peace Circle, and a member of the Jolly Stitcher Club. Jean enjoyed playing cards, shopping, family gatherings and making her famous apple pie to give to family and friends. She was proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her son Gary (Paula) McFarlane of Miller, daughter Bobbi Jean (Jerry) Fanning of St. Lawrence, daughter Holly (Eddie) Pike of Casper, Wyoming; daughter-in-law Shirley McFarlane of Miller; 10 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sisters: Lorraine Sarvold of Spencer, Iowa and Maxine Busse of Spencer, Iowa; brothers: Lloyd (Lucy) Busse of Marcus, Iowa and Robert (Anna Belle) Busse of Lorenz, Iowa; and very specials friends: Janice and Eugene Moncur, Don Kellogg, and Vicki Fanning.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert in 2000; son Douglas in 1992; and a brother William.
