Walter Arnold Schreiber was born April 16, 1931 at Agar, SD to Arnold Frederick and Bessie (Torbert) Schreiber. He attended all of his school at Agar, graduating in 1949.
During Walt’s high school years he enjoyed playing basketball and continued on even after graduation. Walt played amateur basketball, and he was a member of two independent state championship teams. He helped coach many years, and spent as much time as he could helping teach youngsters, including his family, the fundamentals of the game. Walt was inducted into the Amateur Basketball Hall of Fame in 1979.
Walt lived his life as a farmer and rancher. He loved the outdoors; working with kids and teaching them respect for hunting and sports. He was very active in the Agar community. Walt was a 50+ year member of the Agar Fire Department, and spent countless hours teaching 4-H archery. Walt has received many awards for his service and dedication. Two important ones were the Young Outstanding Famer in 1965 and the Soil Conservation Award in 1978. When Walt was not working, he loved spending time shooting archery, hunting deer, pheasant and gophers, gardening, visiting with friends, and his latest hobby of creating recycled metal art.
Walter’s life will be cherished by his children: Dawn (Lee) Kleinschmidt of Harrold, Kim Jost of Agar, Tami Schreiber of Murdo and Bruce Schreiber of Agar; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; brother, Robert (Mary Rush) Schreiber of Foley, AL and twin sisters, Jean (Mike) Willis of Denver, CO and Joan (John “Tug”) Bush of rural Onida; sister-in-law, Lola Schreiber of Pierre and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parent; two brothers, Marion and Edward Schreiber and one grandson, Jonathan Fanger.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Walter’s arrangements.

I worked for Walt and brother Marion one summer during high school and played baseball with him on the Onida town team. He was a humorous, hard working and caring man who was a great role model. Sincerest condolences to his family.

We cannot tell you how badly we feel regarding Walt’s passing. There are so many good memories. Hunting, fishing, coin and gun shows, archery, basketball games, fish fries, NFR watching, working cattle and many visits to name just a few. He was a special man. May your good memories help you in the days ahead. God Bless All Of You.
Really enjoyed knowing Walt and visiting with him about his and dad’s time as friends.
Tami – so sorry for the unexpected loss of your dad. He will always be a very real presence in your heart and memory. Let God give you peace and strength.
I did not know Walt really well the last several years, but I sought him out at my cousin, Dennis Doerr’s funeral some years back, to remind him of a very kind deed he had done for me as a kid about 10 years old or so. We had a carnival going on at the Agar Hall, with all the booths with all the different prizes to be won. My brother John had won a stuffed dog for me, and I was thrilled with it; with my brother’s kindness. I was sitting on the bleachers by myself, cuddling my dog, when Walt Schreiber came up to me, carrying this huge teddy bear. He sat down beside me and said "you know, I am pretty lucky at winning things, but it seems like I always wind up with one of these bears, and I sure would like have chanced to win a dog like that. Would you be interested in a trade?" OH, WOULDN’T I LOVE TO TRADE!!! 😮 ) I am sure he walked off that night, convinced he had made this little girl happy, and he really really did. I cherished that teddy bear for years til I wore it out, but I have never forgotten it. I am grateful I was able to reacquaint myself with him and remind him how much his generosity meant and what an impact it made on my life. May God bless him, his family and loved ones.
My condolences to the Schreiber family. Walter was a great man and always enjoyed visiting with him. He always told me in high school that I needed to drive the lane to get to the free-throw line . He was right. Celebrate his life and tell lots of stories.
Schreiber Family, We want to send our deepest sympathy to all your family. We will truly miss Walt, he was a man with great integrity and a good friend. We had a lot of fun while harvesting wheat for Walt and Bruce (and Marion also) and so many great memories, it was especially fun when Walt and I would get samples of wheat for his entry in the fair. Thank you, Bruce for taking time out of baleing hay to visit with us back in July. We thought Walt looked good. Thanks for all the memories. Your Oklahoma friends, Gene and Lisa Sanders
